Writing A Successful Blog: How To Do It The Right Way (I Finally Got It )
It is almost a little over a year since I started my online venture. I still remember the first day when I signed up for the Wealthy Affiliate University so that, I too, could learn to become a successful online person and live the life all the digital nomads I kept watching on YouTube were living. Today I feel I have learned a lot and I want to share with you a step by step tutorial to show you how to become a successful professional blogger and what aspects you should consider. Writing a successful blog is one of the main choices people will go for when starting an online business. But how do you become really successful? This is what everybody wants to know.
If you are a blogger and want to give a boost to your blog, read this article carefully. This is not just me talking but everything that I have learned with WA, their courses and their fantastic community and support.
Why do people think having a blog is the way to go forward?
If you have come this far it is because either you have a blog or you are thinking about getting started in this exciting world.
Having a Blog is a way to share your passion, thoughts, learning experiences, all the things you are good at, with the rest of the world
There is no better way to expose your knowledge and experience than through articles where, with total freedom, you can share with other users interested in the same topics your own personal experience.
A blog is almost like your Curriculum Vitae, you can allow your true self to become alive and express who you are; in a sense, you can look at a blog like your personal business card.
Personal business card = Personal Brand
Building a personal brand will be the best way to differentiate yourself from other professionals, be visible to companies, position yourself as an expert and move from the position of someone that is looking for work to someone that is sought after because of their knowledge, because of their own brand.
The financial benefits of a Blog
Lots of people will start a blog because they are looking for a way to generate an income. You want to quit your job, you want to be your own boss, you want to make money online. Let’s be honest, we all want to make money and we all need to make money; I know that was my motivation when I started.
I ‘ve got news for you thou: You’re not going to get rich overnight
If you think you will, then you better find something else to do
But if you are constant, committed and dedicated, little by little you will see your blog grow and will eventually reach that financial freedom that you have been searching for.
How? Let me share with you my personal experience
How did I start a Blog?
If a blog lacks strategy, it will die shortly.
That I learned by experience and before I signed up for an online course. I guess at first, I was trying to do it my own way without really knowing what I was supposed to do.
This blog is the third I write. The first one died shortly after I began.
Why? Because it lacked strategy.
I did not have a clear objective, nor did I address a specific audience and, for as hard as it is to admit, I published content of low value. I was just writing convinced that if I kept publishing articles eventually I would have had a following and my Blog could have grown.
The Blog I am writing on now, the one you’re reading, is different.
Six months after I started my first unsuccessful blog I decided that maybe I needed to ask help and started to look for courses online to teach me how I could turn a disaster into something profitable or even, if there was a remote possibility of me doing so.
I am not going to bore you with all the details, but to cut the story short and fast-forwarding to a year later even thou I did not turn my first blog around I have built not one but two successful Blogs where not only I am making an income online now but mostly I am actually doing it by following my passions and talking about things that really interest me and I believe in.
Funny enough I never thought I would enjoy talking about marketing or online ventures or how to write blogs, but I found a new passion for things I did not know and also a great will to want to share my own experience and knowledge with others like me in the hope to motivate someone else in doing the same, follow their dreams and have the certainty, that in time, they too can achieve their financial freedom and success.
What should you know before becoming a Blogger
Being a blogger is not easy. It requires a lot of dedication and effort. Many are the blogs that are born every month, but very few manage to survive after 6 months or even less.
If you are not willing to spend your Sunday afternoons sitting in front of the computer instead of having a cocktail with your friends, or going out to party maybe you shouldn’t start.
But if you are committed and you want to be a professional blogger, then I can only say congratulations! I can prmoise you, you will not regret it.
If you are prepared to take care of all the aspects of your blog, and truly commit for at least, and I am saying AT LEAST six months (realistically speaking) then you will get as many people viewing your blog as personal satisfaction and achievements.
But before you go ahead and start writing, I want you to take into account some aspects of a blogger life:
Time and desire
An article needs at least 4 hours of work. You could be a genius and don’t need any time to research, but as an average, everyone needs to put some time into preparing their blog, what they are going to talk about, the researches needed to cover a specific topic.
You should want to publish with a frequency of two articles a week and when I say write, it’s not just typing the words but you have to find the sources, document, organize the ideas, review what you have written, optimize it for SEO, share it through different media, analyse the results … So it is easy to understand how the time factor is important and the commitment to stick to it is determined by how strong your desire to do it will be.
What will the blog be about?
The topic of your post should be related to the Niche you have chosen for your blog. The more specific the niche the more specific the articles will be.
If you are going to talk about random things every day, you will not get an audience, and never will, unless they just like to read about your personal opinion on stuff.
Reality is people will start to follow you when they feel they are gaining knowledge over a specific topic and the more specific you will be the more audience you will gain.
To give you a simple example, if you have a passion for dogs, you could create a Blog talking about dogs and everything that is related to the animal: reviews about dogs products, tips on how to take care of your dog, what type of training a dog should receive…. you see where I am getting at? No one with a cat will be interested to follow your dog blog but dog’s lovers will love to follow you as long as you can give them something that is interesting to them, something they can learn. Give them value!
The hosting platform
It is the virtual space where your blog will be hosted. My recommendation is that you always bet on a hosting that offers good customer service. Personally, I have been using the hosting platform of WA where my whole venture started over a year ago but there are a few good ones around, just make sure the customer service and support are there.
The domain is the gateway to your blog. My recommendation is to get a domain easy to remember, catchy, and ideally a .com.
If it is a personal blog, choosing your name can be a good option.
If your Blog is related to a specific topic, let’s go back to the Dog niche, for example, to have a domain with the topic of the blog should be the best choice, say for example lovingdogs.com
How to configure your blog
Once the domain and hosting have been chosen, it is a question of setting up your WordPress. Today most hosting platforms offer you the option to install WP automatically in three simple steps, without having to do it manually.
If you are using the Free Basic Option that is offered by WA you can easily follow the steps to set up your WordPress in a matter of a few minutes, even less. The instructions are very clear and anyone can do it, you don’t need to be an expert in HTML coding.
Choose the right template
Bet on a simple design template and flat colours.
If you do not know where to start. Sometimes people waste hours trying to figure out which template they should pick.
In WordPress, once you choose a template it is not for life, you can always go back and change it, alter it, make it better and customize it to your own preferences.
Do you need Google Analytics?
Although it’s hard to believe, I have seen more than one blog that does not have Google Analytics. In reality, it is not something you should stress about or waste hours trying to understand all your reports; but having Google Analytics set up can help you figure out if your blog is going in the right direction as far as reaching an audience and building a follower list.
So, first of all, create a GA account and insert the code that will be given to you before the </ head> tag of your template.
In the WA training, there is a section dedicated to that. Don’t worry, it’s not that hard. When I first heard what I had to do I panicked but in reality, once done it’s a 5-second copy and paste code that you will have to insert on your website. The importance of knowing your objective
What do you want to achieve with your blog? If it is getting rich overnight, I already said before that this is not going to happen.
If your goal is to create a personal brand, position yourself as an expert in a subject or boost the positioning of your website, build a business online, then go ahead, you are on your way to do just that!
How to find ideas to write a post?
There are simple tips and formulas you can use to find inspiration for a post.
- Google Analytics. What are the items that work best? Observe in your web analytics what are the articles that generate most visits. Possibly 80% of your traffic comes exclusively from no more than 3 or 4 articles. And depending on them, write new articles that complement those posts.
- SEO positioning. Do you need to push a keyword? If for SEO reasons you are interested in promoting a certain keyword, write different articles where you can work on that keyword from different angles.
- Respond to the most frequent comments on your posts and forums. If you participate regularly in forums within your Niche, in addition to improving your personal brand, you will detect which are the topics that generate the most interest.
- Ask your social networks. Your blog is designed for your community, and this is part of your Social media channels. Ask them what issues they are interested in, what they want you to talk about or what topics they would like to know more in-depth. The content-on-demand always works. They are waiting for you!
- In any professional field, it is very important that you are always aware of the news of your Niche. Subscribe to similar blogs or trends, attend seminars, conferences, online courses, read books … I can almost guarantee that a series of new ideas will come up for your blog.
- And lastly, why not, go for a walk on the beach. Many times, the best ideas come when our mind is relaxed and we allow it to “think”. A walk with your dog, a shower in the early morning or even getting stuck in a traffic jam is often exceptional source of inspiration.
Types of content for a blog
It is important that you vary the type of content of your blog. Your viewers will be much more interested when they know you offer different posts and discussion every time.
A popular type of post is the “How to…” post.
These are articles that provide a solution. The important thing is that you explain in detail and step by step on how to do whatever it is you are talking about. Also remember, It is important, from time to time to review this type of content, as it is very likely that with time things will change and you need to update it.
Keep in mind that many times users use the formula “How to…” to search for content. An example: “How to” groom your dog. How to…can be a very good beginning for a keyword to use in your Blog as well!
Collaborative articles – This type of article refers to those posts where different relevant authors contribute with their point of view on a topic. It’s an interesting approach because whoever you are working with can help you go viral in social networks. And you, in return, provide them with a quality link to your site.
Tips and strategies – It is not about explaining how to do something, but about telling a particularity of a videogame, a social or cooking network that your readers may not have known. Tips and strategies can help you position yourself as an expert on your topic.
Studies, news, trends – A good recurring content can be analysing the trends and news about your area. Do not limit yourself to copy and paste a press release that the source has released to the media. Read, study carefully and draw your own conclusions. Your readers want to see your own critical vision.
Opinion articles – Why not give your opinion on some aspect of a topic? Some news or issues of your Niche can be the perfect excuse to write an opinion article and start an interesting discussion both in your blog and social networks.
Guest Posts – Guest articles are collaborations of other professional bloggers for your blog. It is a win-win strategy. You win a quality article, where you offer content of interest to your community; and the author benefits from the visibility of your blog.
Many times, this technique is used to generate what is called link building.
Write a Series of posts – If a subject provides lots of material to talk about, instead of writing an article of 3,000 words, choose to create a series of post and break it down in part 1, part 2, part 3 and so on
This will generate interest and increase the time of visits to your blog, and Google loves this.
But don’t improvise, before writing the first post, be prepared, know what you will talk about in the following post, keep in mind when you will publish it, what keywords you will work with. Remember what you want to do at the end of the post is to build an expectation so that your viewers will look forward to reading part 2.
Write Guides or Tutorials – The extended version of the “How …”. In this case thou, the post or article should be should be longer and rich in explanations and details, using images and graphics, explaining how to perform a task, for example, “how to plan step by step advertising campaign in Facebook Ads.”
YouTube Videos – If your thing is not to write but you rather talk in front of a camera, then you should become a Vlogger rather than a Blogger.
There are many successful Vloggers out there that make a definite income from their online Video Channel.
In this case, the content is your embedded video from YouTube. However, you should still want to add the transcription of the video in a post to improve its positioning and guide through your post the viewers to watch your video on YouTube.
How to write the perfect post
Before you start writing make yourself an agenda; decide the contents of your Blog, what are the objective of the post, what is your desired outcome. Choose the keyword that you are going to use, the topic that you will write about and mostly remember: If you do not know what to write then don’t write. The last thing you want to do is put out there a post that has no value whatsoever.
Why do we write a post?
There are several objectives that you can set before writing a post.
Improve the SEO positioning of a keyword, generate visits, increase the number of subscribers, generate quality links in other blogs, generate branding, make an income … are just some of them.
You can set different goals, as long as they are measurable and achievable.
What keywords are you going to use?
Select one or two keywords per post; remember long keywords have a better chance to get ranked and less competition online. Focus on the long-tail keywords that may be more profitable. Writing a post with a keyword such as “dogs” will bring up so much competition you would just be lost among the millions of websites. Writing a post using a long tail keyword like “how to train your dog at home”, will cut down a lot the number of competitors for that particular set of words.
I use Jaaxi that is a keyword tool that helps me see the competition of a particular keyword before I use it and helps me narrow done my selection of words.
Minimum length of words per post
1,200 – 2,000 words I would say at least.
Do not be afraid to write. The greater the extension, the better positioning, as long as the content is of value. If you have nothing to tell, I said it before, do not write and come back to your blog when you have found the inspiration.
Also, try to include links to other sites with greater authority. To enrich your article, mention other articles, link them and inform their authors. I’m sure they will thank you for sharing the article!
Includes optimized images and videos
A post with images, infographics and even Videos capture the attention of a viewer more than just typed words. Remember people are visual.
But do not forget to optimize the images you are using for SEO.
How? Make sure the image is the correct size and weighs as little as possible.
It is also important that both the file and the alt tag describe the image. If you opt for the video, even better. This will increase the time spent on the web, and Google likes that.
You need to get comments
Encourage users to generate content. They are key to positioning! The comments in a post will help you to keep the publication updated, and improve your positioning.
Use good and captivating Titles and Headlines
A good headline will be the key for viewers to click on your post in your social networks or search results. There are certain terms such as “… in only 2 steps”, “definitive”, “easily”, “… what you had never been told”, “Beginner’s Guide” …that always work.
But be careful, you must deliver in the content. What you promise in the headline you must give in your article.
Create internal links in the article itself
A good structure of internal links is key to improve the positioning of your website. Link posts together within your blog so that if you are mentioning something about “dog collars” in your post about how to train a dog, you can link that word to another post that you have written that is entirely dedicated to collars, for example.
But be aware, do not go crazy inserting links. It is also important that the anchor text of these is not the keyword that you are working on in the article.
Create highlights to share your article on Social media like Twitter or Facebook or Instagram. It is important that the body of the article includes highlights and encourage users to share it for you.
Make sure the structure of your header is done right
It is very important that you structure the content according to its importance through H1, H2, H3 … The Google spider likes it. It allows the viewer to better understand the contents and improve the user experience.
How to generate thousands of quality visits to a blog
This is like the million-dollar question cause once you have the answer to this one you are on your way to success.
For thousands of users to be interested in your blog, the first step is to write articles. The second is to design strategies to attract quality visits, users who are really interested in your content, read it, share it, trust you, call you …
Let’s see some of these strategies to generate quality traffic:
Organic Traffic via SEO positioning
Thoroughly optimizes each article for SEO. I have a plugin called SEO ALL in One that helps me to do that, but there are others you can use like Yoast plugin for example.
Getting Organic Traffic is a slow process and it won’t happen in a day or a week, you must be patient before entering the “ grace” of master Google.
Every time I publish an article I share it with a target audience – people interested in affiliate marketing for example- through Facebook Ads. In addition to generating quality visits, you will increase the number of your followers.
Optimize your old posts
When you first started you did not know as much as you do now, hence the importance of spending the same time writing new articles as optimizing old articles. Check the extension, the headings, the goal, insert links to other articles, to the categories you want to boost …
Create a List of subscribers
Subscribers are those users who visited your blog one day, were interested in your content and decided to leave their email to receive your next articles.
Create a subscription pop up using the SUMO plugin and link it to the list of subscribers you created in Mail Chimp for example. If you do not have an Autoresponder yet you can still use SUMO to collect your subscribers. SUMO’s a free plugin
Share your articles in social networks: the blog fan page, discussion groups of your same theme, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and even Instagram.
Try different headlines and images to see which one arouses more interest. A tool that will help you with this is BlogsterApp.
Build your Personal Brand
Work your personal brand. Do the networking, attend events, courses, seminars … tell the world that you have a blog!
The links coming from sites of the same theme or of great authority, as well as helping you improve your SEO positioning, will generate recurrent traffic. Keep this in mind and prepare a Link Building strategy.
Create valuable content
Without a doubt, the most effective way to generate traffic. The Internet is full of garbage.
Google is committed to rewarding content and users know this. The best formula to attract quality traffic to your blog is offering a different content, that provides information, that makes the viewer think and keeps him interested.
How to be a blogger and earn money
To make money with a blog there is only one way: work, work and work.
If you intend to get rich overnight you will not.
But it is also true that with work, perseverance and more work you can earn a living as a professional blogger.
The road is not easy and I am talking by personal experience. I watched a 21 years old being successful and could not understand why he could while I was still learning, but eventually, I got there.
It’s a very long road and with more than a few sacrifices, but I assure you it’s worth it.
But how can you make money?
There are different ways you can make money online:
Your blog, if you have visitors, is a good advertising platform, like any media. And the more visits, the better. There are several formulas to earn money through advertising.
One of them is Google Adsense, Google’s advertising platform, which allows you to insert third-party banners on your blog.
Another formula is that, depending on your audience, establish different advertising formats (Banners, buttons,…) and set the monthly rates for each.
Sell your Own Products
Many bloggers create their own products (online courses, templates, e-books …). Premium content that, to be able to access it, has to be purchased.
If your blog brings your knowledge and experience, it is logical that many companies will be interested in you and propose to collaborate with you or that you form part of their team.
Position yourself as an expert, you will see how they begin to invite you to give talks, workshops, conferences … and once you start, they will call you from more places. The difficult part is to hang in there until all these things will happen.
A good way to earn extra money is through affiliate networks. Many marketing businesses offer this option. If someone joins a particular platform or online course through your affiliate link, you receive a percentage of the sale of the subscription.
Will I succeed?
Above everything, I am someone that has always strongly believed in the power of visualization and if you see yourself as a successful Blogger, then I have no doubt you will.
I might have given some tips, some suggestions, hopefully help you understand better what it means to be a blogger, but it is on you to do the work.
